como ke nadie le toma importancia a esto les pongo la historia de kia kompleta en ingles eso si...

Established in 1944, Kia is the oldest vehicle manufacturer in Korea, with an impressive list of firsts to its credit. A driving force behind the Korean automotive industry, Kia has been instrumental in propelling the country to fifth place in total automotive production. Given that Kia produced its first automobile only forty years ago, in 1962, that is an incredible achievement.

Indeed, Kias beginnings were much more modest. The company opened its doors for the first time in December 1944 as Kyungsung Precision Industry. The company began making bicycle parts by hand in a small factory in Youngdeungpo, in the south of modern-day Seoul. From the outset, though, the seeds of innovation were being sown. In March 1952, Kia built Koreas first domestic bicycle, the Samcholli-ho. The bicycle was built in a temporary factory in the southern port city of Busan, where the company had relocated after the outbreak of the Korean War.

With the introduction of the Samcholli-ho, the company changed its name, to the "Kia Industrial Company." The "Kia" name derives from two Chinese characters "ki" meaning "rising up" and "a" meaning Asia. Kia can therefore be roughly translated as "Rising out of the East" or "Rising out of Asia." A name very suitable for the rising ambitions of the car company.

A decade later, in October 1961, Kia rolled out the C-100 motorcycle, and the Korean motor vehicle industry was born. The pace of development was startling. Only three months after producing Koreas first motorcycle, Kyungsungs Shiheung production line was building K360 three wheel trucks. Production of three wheel trucks would continue until 1973, by which time the company had sold 25,000 of the vehicles. Motorcycle production ended in 1981.

The Titan four-wheel truck developed in 1971 was so ubiquitous that, in Korea, "Titan" was the generic name used for all trucks. By this time, Kia was joined in the market by the Hyundai Motor Company who began business in 1967 producing vehicles under license from Ford. The Hadongwhan Bus Company which would later become Ssangyong, was also making buses from U.S. Army components. Asia Motors, which would be taken over by Kia in 1976, began operations in 1965.

Kia, however, remained ahead of the pack, producing Koreas first gasoline engine in 1973 and, in October 1974, Koreas first passenger car the Brisa. The Brisa would later be released as a pick-up truck to become the first Korean vehicle to be exported, when it was sold in the Middle East. Koreas first diesel engine was also produced by Kia, in 1978.

It was in the late 1970s that international manufacturers began to recognize Kias manufacturing expertise. By 1979, Kia was producing under license the Peugeot 604 and the Fiat 132 sedans. In 1986, under an equity partnership with Ford Motor Company, Kia began producing the Pride, or Festiva, small car. The Pride remains Kia’s best selling vehicle, with almost 2 million units sold to date. Knockdown production of the Pride still continues in six countries around the world.

Development of the Pride was carried out at Kias first dedicated R&D center, which was opened in October 1984 in Sohari, near Seoul. It has since been joined by two domestic and four overseas R&D centers. The first overseas R&D center was opened in Japan in 1989.

In the 1980s, Kia increased production of small trucks to include the best selling Bongo, Rhino and Trade cargo vehicles. In the domestic market, Kia continues to dominate the cargo truck segment to this day. Production of passenger cars also continued, with development of Kias first two-liter vehicle, the Concord, in 1987. By 1988, twenty-five years after the introduction of the K360, Kia produced its one millionth vehicle.

In 1990 the name of the company was officially changed to Kia Motors Corporation. The same year saw completion of Kias Hwasung production facility at Asan Bay, south of Seoul. The plant is Kias largest, covering a total area of more than 3 million square meters. Also developed in 1990 was Kias - and Korea’s - first 1.5 liter DOHC engine.

In 1992, Kia established its U.S. subsidiary, Kia Motors America, headquartered in Irvine, California. The United States has subsequently become Kias largest single export market, with sales approaching a quarter of a million per year. Two R&D centers are also operating in the U.S., one in Los Angeles and another in Detroit.

European operations began in 1993, with the launch of the Sephia passenger car. The same year saw cumulative production pass 3 million. Also introduced in 1993 was the Sportage SUV, completing a project that Kia began in the mid 1980s. The Sportage is another very successful model globally and would go on to record impressive results in the grueling Baja and Paris-Dakar rallies.
In 1994 Kia celebrated its fiftieth anniversary. Everything was going well and Kia Motors was one of the largest corporations in Korea. Global success looked to be just around the corner. However, in 1997 a mixture of external factors brought the Korean economy crashing down. The weight of its investments in other areas rendered Kia Motors insolvent and the company went into receivership.

The takeover of Kia by Hyundai Motors in 1998 marked the beginning of a rapid turnaround. In a wide-ranging restructuring program, non-performing affiliates were closed down and sold off and initiatives were put in place to implement management innovation, improve sales performance and maximize customer satisfaction.

The results were dramatic. By 1999 Kia was profitable once more and has remained so ever since. The formation of the Hyundai-Kia Automotive Group in September 2000 saw Kia begin to benefit from synergies in research and servicing. An exciting new range of vehicles was developed, with more contemporary styling and greater appeal for overseas customers. In 2002, Kia produced its ten millionth car. Today, Kia does more than 75% of its business overseas. Landmark models such as the Carnival/Sedona minivan and the Sorento premium SUV are propelling Kia rapidly forward in terms of product quality and consumer appeal. The company also became the major sponsor of the Australian Open tennis tournament in 2002.

In 2004, Kia Motors posted positive growth in every region of the world and was the fastest growing auto brand in the world, especially in Europe. Kia exported 760,149 vehicles worldwide in 2004, representing a 43% increase over the pervious year. Exports for 2004 totaled 330,707 units to North America and 264,412 units to Europe. By region, exports grew by 71% in Europe, 27% in North America, 56% in Central & South America, 49% in the Middle East & Africa, and 25% in Asia & Pacific. The forecast for 2005 is even brighter, with a large planned increase to the European market that will raise its annual total to 412,000 units.

In March of 2005, Kia Motors celebrated its 5 millionth cumulative export. This achievement is noteworthy in light of the fact that Kia reached the 4 million export milestone a little over one year before. In 2005, Kia has its sights set on reaching 1 million annual exports (including production in China).

Since joining the Hyundai-Kia Automotive Group, Kia has also seen a steady increase in export revenues, growing from around US$5 billion in 2003 to US$7 billion in 2004, and we expect to reach US$10 billion in export revenue in 2005.

On the product front, Kia has completed the introduction of a full line-up in a very short period of time. Last year’s addition of the A-segment Picanto, C-segment Cerato, and new Sportage compact SUV has rounded out the Kia line-up, giving the company a highly competitive vehicle in every segment of the market. And with the introduction of three new models in 2005, Kia’s product line-up will be exceptionally balanced and poised for success.

Kia’s competitive products have received numerous high profile awards over the past year including Strategic Vision (USA)’s Most Delightful Car of the Year (Oprius/Amanti) and Total Value Award (Carnival/Sedona), while the Cerato (Spectra) was named Canada’s Car of the Year in its class.
